Star Refrigerators
In any property, the refrigerator is the single biggest
electricity hog. Simply switching to an Energy Star
certified refrigerator can lower your energy consumption
by more than 10%. These newer energy efficient models
also have better insulation and more efficient compressors,
as well as more precise temperature and defrost mechanisms,
making them a must-have for any green development or
remodeling project. But here are some tips for buying
the most energy efficient fridge you can: choose a
op freezer model since it uses 10-25% less energy than
side-by-side models; don’t select an automatic
ice-maker since it can increase your appliance’s
energy consumption by 14-20%; buy a fridge without
an anti-sweat feature or one with an energy saver switch
that turns down heating coils since these heaters consume
5-10% more energy than fridges without one; and keep
in mind that the most energy-efficient refrigerators
are 16-20 cubic feet.
