Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, use 75-80%%
percent less energy to operate than the more commonly
known incandescent bulbs. Since they can last up to
10 times longer, that translates into over $30 worth
of savings in electricity costs for each light bulb
even though they cost a little more than the bulbs
we’re all used to. CFLs also don’t produce
as much heat as incandescents, so they’re safer
to use (no burned fingers!) and can even cut down on
air-conditioning costs. CFLs come in a wide variety
of types, sizes, and shapes to fit any type of fixture
from table lamps to recessed lighting to dimmers. And
since replacing a single incandescent bulb with a CFL
keeps half a ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere during
the bulb’s lifetime, its easy to see how even
the smallest step toward greening your home can have
a dramatic impact on our environment.
